Ehrhardt, South Carolina – Home of the Schuetzenfest for 36 years!

We invite you to come and visit Ehrhardt for our Schuetzenfest on August19th and 20th, 2011. Also not to miss – there will be many activities leading up to our big weekend and we hope you'll join us for all of them! Below, you will find the Events Schedule, starting with the Miss Schuetzenfest Pageant and ending with our Street Dances on Saturday night.

This year's festival theme is "36 Years of Schuetzenfest History 1976-2011". We will be bringing back memories of days gone by. The color scheme is purple and gold because those are the old Ehrhardt High School colors. In the booklet there is a section from the old Ehrhardt Tiger annual that features the students in 1958 from grades 1-12. The booklet itself is purple and gold as are the t-shirts that were printed.

What is the history of the Schützenfest and where did it originate? Ehrhardt, South Carolina, has been hosting our town festival since 1976. It was originally started because of the Bicentennial – that year, everyone was celebrating our country's 200th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and there was a series of celebrations across the country. Ehrhardt decided to take part in these celebrations, starting our festival at the kickoff of hunting season, and calling it the Schuetzenfest. The name of our festival comes from the traditional Schützenfest, or 'marksmen's (hunter's) festival', a very long-established folk festival in Germany. Since Ehrhardt was founded by Conrad Ehrhardt, a German immigrant, and many of Ehrhardt's citizens come from a German background, the name is fitting. Another reason? The area around Ehrhardt, South Carolina, is a hunter's paradise.

Ehrhardt proudly brings you this event not only as a tribute to our own German heritage, but also as a celebration of our country's freedom!
